Easy Soft Flour Tortilla Recipe

Light and buttery, easily foldable, and big enough to make a lovely stuffed burrito! I thought it would be too much of a task to make tortillas every time we wanted them, but it’s quite simple. This easy soft flour tortilla recipe can be made with just a few ingredients in a minimal amount of time, and they are delicious!

Pressure Cooked Pinto Beans

Dinner ideas: Bean burritos – pressure cook dried and rinsed pinto beans for your flour tortillas! See the post in the Joyous Home Community on how to save money cooking pinto beans, and how easy it is to pressure cook them quickly.

This is Jessica’s recipe, and we make 12 soft tortillas from one recipe. I normally double the recipe if all 10 of us will be here.

Simple Ingredients—Easy Soft Flour Tortilla Recipe

Unsalted Butter – Another type of fat can be used, such as lard, or oil – we prefer the taste of butter in these flour tortillas.
Unbleached White Flour – White flour is used here. If you decide to try whole-grain flour, you may need to add a little more water. Whole grain soaks up more liquid than its fake counterpart – (white). It’s easier to make soft flour tortillas with white flour.
Hot Water – Make the water just hot enough to help the fat melt into the flour.
Salt – You’ll need to test the salt amount after a go-round with a batch. I found anything less than a teaspoon makes them bland.
Baking Powder – This is where you get the nice puffy bubbles from, where baking soda would render them flat.

Allowing the dough to rest for 30 minutes makes it easier to roll out tortilla rounds. Outside of the time to rest, these tortillas are quick and easy to make, nothing too hard or fancy about them. I think you’ll love how fresh they taste.

We have found that a french rolling pin works well to roll out the circles. Press each ball slightly flat, and then using your rolling pin, roll each ball into 8″ circles, about 1/8″ thick, just make sure you roll them thin so they cook quick and even.

We use medium heat in a cast iron skillet. Lightly spray the skillet. Take one circle at a time, and fry each side until the tortillas are brown and bubbling. This doesn’t take long, only about a minute on each side.

Enjoy with your favorite filling!
