Learning the knit stitch is the foundation of knitting, after learning to cast-on. In this video tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a knit stitch, step by step. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refresh your skills, this simple technique will help you start making scarves, blankets, dishcloths, and more.
What You’ll Need:
- Knitting needles – A good beginning size is 6 or 6.5 mm
- Yarn (any weight suitable for your needles)
- Scissors
Note that in your pattern, the symbol for a knit stitch is (k).
How to Make the Knit Stitch
1. Cast on the desired number of stitches.
2. Hold the needle with the cast-on stitches in your left hand.
3. Insert the right needle into the front of the first stitch from left to right.
4. Wrap the yarn around the right needle counterclockwise.
5. Pull the new loop through the stitch.
6. Slide the old stitch off the left needle.
7. Repeat across the row.
Tips for Beginners:
- Keep your tension relaxed and consistent.
- Practice slowly until the motion feels natural.
- Count your stitches regularly to avoid accidental increases or decreases.
- Use light-colored yarn when learning so you can easily see your stitches.
This video was originally made for my children, and now my grandchildren watch it to learn. I hope it’s helpful to you also!
