Lining and Casing

Sewing Scallops!

The next video on constructing pockets and lining is coming next. I had this, wasn't sure it was necessary. Excuse the end where I was holding the camera - it was a quick after-thought to show the sewing part on the scallop. We will finish the apron this week!

Pockets - Small Change

For the pockets - I decided to layer it with another piece of lining, (3 pieces total now) so the inside pocket would be free of hemming and threads. If you want to put your pockets together before the next video:

Make sure your pockets are trimmed and the same size as the cutout from the top part of the template apron as I've shown you in the video.

Hem the tops of each piece, 1/4" under. Place the lining and main fabric together. Lay the next piece of lining on top of the main fabric, right sides together (if there is a RS).

Sew from the sides, all the way around to the other side, 1/4" seam. Clip corners and seams. Pull right side out, using a seam tool, smooth out the seams, starch, and press. The pocket is ready to have the applique attached, and be sewn to the front.

It was too dark to take pictures tonight, and a video with the lining and pockets is coming!

Video 2 Making Scallops

Below are simple instructions, a scallop template, and the video for making the scallops. I made another video, wasn't sure it was necessary but I'll get that up tomorrow. Instructions for both steps, making, and sewing scallops are in the PDF below. The video is on making the scallops. They turned out nicer than I expected! Whoo-hoo! The next steps will be pockets and lining. Don't throw away your scallop template. We'll be putting scallops on the pockets too.

Apron Templates and First Video

I had an after-thought of showing a preview of this project, but I changed up the pattern some. So I'm sewing this along with you in every sense.

Note that I get nervous doing videos, so I repeated some things in the intro. I'm not crazy, I promise. (ha.)

ALSO, I forgot to say, seam the pocket pieces I mention this video, same as the apron 1/4". The next video and sewing session will likely be Monday.

New Start of Friday October 17th - FABRIC Requirements

I'm moving the start date to Friday of this week, October 17th!

I'm tweaking some things on my pattern. Since I started the instructions from scratch, I just want to fine-tune them after I made an apron. I want the video instructions to reflect the changes so I need a few more days.

The only thing that doesn't change is definitely 1 yard of fabric - I would use 60" if you plan to use the same color for pockets. Then you'll need one yard for the lining. For my lining, I bought a polyester/cotton mix, white. It was a bit softer and lighter than regular cotton.

Still, 1/2 yd. for embellishment fabric is the plan, there may be leftover.

This is an adjustable apron, using polyester cording. I love it because you can pull the apron lower or higher.

You'll need approx. 3 yd. and this depends on your frame, but I think 3 yds. will allow enough tie in the back.

Print the fabric requirements if needed below, added a pic of the cable cording too.

Yay! Ready for another? Our next group project is an easy apron. This starts Tuesday, October 13th and ends Friday, October 30th.
